Spotify provides magazine articles in audio format

Spotify has launched 'Articles,' a service that allows users to listen to magazine articles in audio format. It is available to users in regions where audiobooks are offered. Over 650 full-length English articles are initially available. Content is sourced from Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, WIRED, Vanity Fair, Pitchfork, and others.

Each article is produced to be less than 2 hours long. Production is handled by the Spotify Audiobooks in-house team. Premium users can listen within their monthly audiobook usage time. Free users can purchase articles for $1.99 each.

This feature marks a shift for Spotify to include reading material within its audio consumption, following music, podcasts, and audiobooks. According to The Verge, the narration uses both human and digital voices. The parts where digital voice is used are indicated to the user.

Users now have the option to listen to long articles instead of reading them. They can consume magazine articles during their commute, exercise, or travel time. However, the initial content is centered on English-language media. The direct impact on Korean users is limited.

Spotify is showing a direction of increasing audiobook usage time and expanding time spent within the app. Magazine articles are shorter than books and more curated than podcasts. This is an example of a music app expanding further into a content hub.
