Samsung Electronics unveiled Android XR-based AI glasses for the first time at Google I/O 2026. Samsung and Google showcased two types of AI glasses, developed in collaboration with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, at an event held in Mountain View, California, on May 19, 2026. This marks the first time the actual designs have been revealed, and the products are scheduled to be released in select markets in the second half of this year.
These AI glasses are a companion device that assists the Galaxy AI phone. You can summon Gemini by voice without taking out your smartphone and execute functions such as navigation, recommendations for nearby places, notification summaries, and adding events. You can listen to text translations while looking at menus or signs, and it also provides real-time voice translation that reflects the tone of the person you are talking to.
There is no display. Instead, it includes speakers, a camera, and a microphone. The structure allows AI to understand the situation the user is seeing and hearing, and process necessary tasks via voice. The camera can also capture the scene currently being viewed. Rather than AR glasses that replace the smartphone screen, it is closer to an AI interface that reduces the need to use your hands in daily life.
The design direction is divided into two paths. The Gentle Monster model emphasizes a more experimental and bold impression, while the Warby Parker model is closer to everyday wearability and classic eyewear forms. Samsung is responsible for the hardware technology, and Google handles the AI experience based on Android XR and Gemini. From a market perspective, it is highly likely to be directly compared to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. Both products emphasize a hands-free experience in daily life based on cameras, microphones, speakers, and AI assistants. The difference lies in the ecosystem. Meta connects around Instagram, Facebook, and Meta AI, while Samsung and Google expand around Galaxy smartphones, Android XR, and Gemini.
