Google Search Becomes an AI Agent

The role of Google Search is shifting from a tool that displays links to an AI agent interface that handles tasks on behalf of the user. Google announced at Google I/O 2026 on May 19, 2026, that it is redesigning the search bar around AI. The new search bar can accept long queries and accepts not only text but also images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs as input.

The core change is not in how search results are selected, but in the act of using search itself. Traditional search required users to enter keywords, open multiple links, compare information, and reach a conclusion. With the new search, users explain their purpose in natural language, and the AI gathers, summarizes, and proceeds to the next question. Google stated in the AI Overview that it provides a flow that allows users to ask follow-up questions immediately and seamlessly transitions into AI Mode.

Search bars are becoming increasingly similar to command windows. Users can make requests such as "keep checking options that meet these criteria," "compare based on this data," or "organize it to fit my situation," rather than simply "find something.".

AI agents transform search from a one-time action into an ongoing task. Through 'Information Agents,' Google is preparing a feature that monitors topics of user interest 24/7 and provides summary notifications when changes matching specific criteria occur. For example, a homebuyer can input their desired criteria and have an agent continuously check for new listings. This feature is scheduled to be available first to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the summer of 2026.

Search is expanding to include actions such as reservations and purchases. Google has announced features that allow users to handle local experiences, service bookings, and phone inquiries for certain businesses within the search function. This works by having the search engine aggregate and display prices, availability, and booking methods based on the user's stated criteria. The search results page is no longer merely the end of information, but is becoming closer to a workspace where tasks can be started and finished.

The interface is also changing. Google is preparing a 'generative UI' that generates charts, tables, simulations, and custom widgets tailored to questions within Search. If a user requests a task they need to check repeatedly, such as managing a workout routine or preparing to move, Search can create a screen in the form of a small app or dashboard.
