Google unveiled the personal AI agent 'Gemini Spark' at Google I/O 2026. Gemini Spark is a 24/7 personal AI agent that operates within the Gemini app. It organizes tasks based on user instructions, handles work across multiple apps, and automates repetitive tasks. Google described it as a "personal AI agent that helps navigate digital life and get things done.".
The core of Gemini Spark is execution beyond chatting. Traditional chatbots generated answers when a user entered a question. Spark operates in the background according to tasks, rules, and schedules set by the user. Google described Spark as an autonomous AI agent that performs multi-step tasks based on user instructions, rather than waiting for prompts like standard chatbots.
The biggest differentiator is its connection to the Google ecosystem. Gemini Spark connects by default with Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube, and Google Maps. This connection is turned off by default and must be enabled in the settings. Once enabled, you can create drafts based on information in emails, documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, organize schedules and tasks, or find and group necessary information.
For example, if a user is preparing for a team trip, Spark can read email conversations, organize plans, record receipts in a spreadsheet, and draft reminder emails for participants. For home maintenance, it can estimate necessary maintenance schedules based on past bills and repair history, and create recurring reminders and to-do lists in Calendar and Keep.
Spark is not a feature that runs only on the device. According to Google, Spark runs on dedicated virtual machines in Google Cloud. This allows it to continue processing tasks even if you close your laptop or lock your phone. TechCrunch explained that this structure makes Spark closer to a 'continuously running agent' than a typical app function.
Methods for business automation were also presented. Google incorporated structures called Tasks, Skills, and Schedules into Spark. Tasks is a feature that connects to Google Workspace applications such as Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, and Slides to assign tasks to agents. Skills is a feature that allows users to define frequently performed tasks in their preferred manner. Schedules is a feature that enables tasks to be executed when specific times or conditions are met.
Security and control are also important points. Google explained that Spark is not designed to continuously read emails randomly. It operates according to user-defined rules and stated that it does not send emails without explicit instructions, even when used as an email management agent. However, given that this feature can be linked to personal mail, documents, calendars, location, and payment flows, users must personally manage which app connections to enable and which permissions to grant.
The rollout is starting on a limited basis. According to Google's official page, Gemini Spark is currently being rolled out to trusted testers and is scheduled to be available to U.S. Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and older and select business users. Google stated that it will expand access to more users and enterprises over the next few weeks.
