Dyson has unveiled a new wet vacuum cleaner, the 'Pencil Wash,' featuring an ultra-slim design with a handle diameter of 38mm. This product is the slimmest and lightest wet vacuum cleaner Dyson has ever introduced. The key feature is that it reduces the burden of operation while maintaining wet cleaning performance and hygienic design.
True to its name, the Pencil Wash features a slender, pencil-like shape. The main body weighs 2.2kg, while the actual weight felt in the hand during use is approximately 380g. It is designed to allow for directional changes with just a light twist of the wrist, and can be reclined up to 170 degrees, making it relatively easy to clean under low furniture or in narrow gaps. The product is designed to reach spaces up to 15cm in height.
The cleaning method is also noteworthy. Dyson explained that it combines moisture supply, friction action, and soil extraction technology to ensure that clean water is always used while cleaning the floor. In addition, a system supplying water from eight points is applied to reliably deliver fresh water to the rollers. Users can select two moisture supply modes tailored to the floor material or the severity of the stains. They also emphasized that the design uses only the necessary amount of water, allowing the floor to dry quickly after cleaning.
Roller performance has also been enhanced. The Pencil Wash features a high-density microfiber roller containing 64,000 filaments per square centimeter. This roller rotates rapidly to handle both wet dirt and dry debris simultaneously. It also incorporates a design that continuously separates and discharges contaminated water and debris during the rotation process. Dyson stated that it can clean up to 100 square meters of floor space with a 300ml water tank.
The most distinguishing feature of this product is its filter-free system. Unlike conventional wet vacuum cleaners that trap dust, it lacks a filter to reduce concerns about unpleasant odors and bacterial growth caused by accumulated dirt. It also minimizes the risk of performance degradation due to filter clogging.
John Churchill, Dyson’s Chief Technology Officer, explained that Dyson’s direction is to make products smaller and lighter while significantly improving performance. This means the Pencil Wash is the result of applying this philosophy to wet vacuum cleaners. Through this product, Dyson aims to provide both the simple usability of a broom and the precision of its engineering. It is scheduled for release in Korea in March.
