A new display font for YouTube. Global Type Foundry Sharp Type announced that it has developed YouTube Display, a multi-script display font, at YouTube's request.
According to Sharp Type, YouTube was tasked with creating a system that would simultaneously ensure consistency and distinction across screens and touchpoints for its billions of users. The new typeface was designed as a display-specific font, leveraging YouTube's accumulated brand equity while supporting a wide range of languages.
Development involved script-specific experts. Latin and Cyrillic were handled by Lucas Sharp and Mairan Thuong, while Devanagari and Tamil were handled by Anagari Narayanan. Korean was designed by Yanghee Ryu, and Thai script was handled by Shirin Guncloy. Hebrew was handled by Anna Corasi, Arabic by Maha Akle, and Japanese by Lucas Sharp, Calvin Kwok, and Kazuhiro Yamada. Latin and Cyrillic kerning was handled by Izino Marini, enhancing typesetting quality in large environments. YouTube reportedly also established a separate mastering team to work on quality control for each script.
