Introducing the ChatGPT advertising model

OpenAI has unveiled its ChatGPT service expansion strategy, along with new advertising initiatives aimed at broadening AI accessibility. OpenAI explains that as AI evolves into personalized super assistants, who has access to this technology will have a critical impact on expanding social opportunities.

OpenAI has been making powerful AI accessible to more people through its free version and low-cost subscription model, ChatGPT Go. ChatGPT Go has been available in 171 countries since August of last year and is now expanding to all regions where ChatGPT is available, including the US. For $8 per month, you can access messaging, image generation, file upload, and memory features. We will also begin testing ads in the US in the coming weeks for the Free and Go plans. Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans are ad-free.

OpenAI stated that user trust will be its top priority during the advertising process. ChatGPT's responses are based on objective, useful information, independent of advertising, and conversation content or personal information is not sold to advertisers. Users can opt out of ad personalization and delete their data at any time.

OpenAI's advertising operating principles include mission-aligned, independent responses, dialogue privacy, choice and control, and the pursuit of long-term value. They emphasized prioritizing user experience and trust over retention time or short-term profits.

Initially, ads will be clearly displayed at the bottom of responses when there are sponsored products or services related to the conversation. Ads will only appear for adult login accounts and will not cover sensitive topics such as health, mental health, or politics.

OpenAI explained that advertising can also offer new opportunities for small businesses and emerging brands. AI-powered conversational ads will be designed to provide more information than traditional static ads and encourage users to ask questions and make decisions. OpenAI plans to maintain the trust and value of ChatGPT while incorporating user feedback through ad testing.
