Utah created the Olympic logo for the next nine years

With 3,000 days to go until the 2034 Winter Olympics, Utah unveiled its new name and transition logo on the 24th. The shorter official name, "Utah 2034," was chosen over the "Salt Lake City–Utah 2034" used during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) bid process.

Brad Wilson, CEO of the organizing committee, emphasized that the 13 stadiums across five Utah counties are participating, explaining, "Whether you live in Vernal or downtown Salt Lake City, everyone should be a part of Team 2034." With the state government providing financial support, the organization is committed to putting the state's brand front and center.

However, Salt Lake City's reaction is mixed. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said she was "heartbroken" and that "few people expected the city name to be omitted." The 2002 event was named "Salt Lake City 2002," and that success was a key asset in the 2034 bid. Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson also expressed regret, saying, "What the world will remember is the Salt Lake brand.".

The newly released logo for the transition also sparked controversy. Its bold font, depicting red rocks and snowy trails, drew criticism from some, who said it was reminiscent of classic animation or movie logos. Online, some criticized it, saying it was difficult to read, like an anti-spam code. Conversely, some positively evaluated it, citing its resemblance to Utah's natural landscapes and Native American petroglyphs.

The currently revealed logo is not the official emblem, but rather a transitional branding that will be used until 2029. According to International Olympic Committee regulations, the final emblem can only be confirmed after the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Until then, the Utah 2034 and UT34 wordmarks will be used on airport and stadium merchandise.

Marketing experts analyze that "Utah 2034" is advantageous in terms of brand strategy because a short and simple name is more memorable. However, it is uncertain how much of a symbolic impact the name Salt Lake will have on the generation that did not experience the 2002 Olympics firsthand. Meanwhile, Mayor Mendenhall emphasized that he had agreed with the organizing committee to include "Salt Lake City" in some instances of the new logo, saying, "We have always been and will always be an Olympic city.".
