Typographically-focused branding of AI tool cursors

This brand identity is a collaboration between Cursor and Chimera. Cursor sought to capture both the brand's sophistication and human warmth by optimizing the existing logo for screen-friendliness without drastically modifying it.

The core of the refresh is Cursor Gothic, based on Chimera's retail typeface, Waldenburg. Cursor loved the form of this typeface and sought to maintain its basic structure while enhancing its functional perfection. The logo and various product icons were also created within this typeface framework.

Waldenburg embodies the rational structure of Akzidenz Grotesk and the analog sensibility of Univers. Custer Gothic further condenses this approach, emphasizing the square-based form and contrast, and has been adjusted to create a smooth rhythm even at small sizes. This project required the typeface to support both branding and product UI.

The most unique element is the logo ligature. The cursor logo was not mathematically centered, which often caused alignment issues when placed alongside other text. Chimera solved this problem by embedding the logo and lockup directly within the typeface. This allowed designers to create a complete logo composition using only the typeface.

The logo system is based on Ben Barry's original cube design, expanded into 2D, 2.5D, and 3D versions. The corners of the cube and cursor have been subtly rounded to ensure clarity even on small screens, and the visual size of the cursor has been adjusted for each version, taking into account light sources and contrast. This decision prioritizes visual fidelity on screen over geometric perfection.

The website is designed to go beyond a simple showcase, allowing users to experience the product's core features directly within the browser. It includes a mini code editor interaction implemented with CSS, with the cursor itself acting as a development tool. The background image features artwork from real artists, visually connecting the creative experience.
