X Chat Unveils Crypto-Based Encrypted Messaging Service

XChat, X's next-generation messaging platform, has been unveiled. X has been pushing for a standalone messaging platform that replaces the existing DM function.

XChat was developed with end-to-end encryption as its foundation, aiming for a secure chat environment. In addition to text messaging, it supports voice and video calls, and even offers file transfer capabilities, significantly expanding its usability. Users can edit or delete sent messages, giving them flexible control over their conversations. It also features a screenshot blocker and a disappearing message mode, enhancing privacy.

While security features have been strengthened, there are still areas for improvement. It has been pointed out that metadata is not encrypted, potentially exposing sender and recipient information. Another issue is the structure's inability to completely prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. X continues its efforts to enhance security reliability by announcing that it is developing a tool that allows users to directly verify the authenticity of encrypted conversations.

XChat development began in 2023, and stability was verified during the alpha testing phase in 2024. Improved audio and video call quality, cloud backup capabilities, and a desktop version are planned for the second half of 2025.

The Korean market is a key strategic target for XChat. With high smartphone penetration and fierce competition among messaging apps, XChat is positioning its security-focused features and AI-powered tools as distinct elements. Korean beta testers have praised its fast message processing speed and streamlined interface. The real-time translation feature has proven to be highly useful in a global conversation environment. Requests for Korean-based emojis and localized recommendation features are also continuing, leaving localization work as a remaining challenge.

XChat is positioned as a core platform for X's super app strategy. Integration with X Money will integrate messaging and payments into a single service. Enterprise collaboration features are also under development, and attention is focused on whether this will secure new competitiveness in the global market.
