The productivity tool Notion has released version 3.0, and the centerpiece of the update is the Notion Agent, which is designed to let AI take over most of the work that humans used to do. It's time to let AI create documents, build databases, search external tools, and run complex workflows within Notion.
"Notion has always been about collaborative document and data management, but now AI can do real work on top of that," says Akshay Kothari, co-founder of Notion. The 3.0 update brings to the forefront the concept of an "agent," which is not just a chatbot, but one that understands the context of your work and takes direct action.
Agents can work autonomously for up to 20 minutes, collecting and organizing information across hundreds of pages. For example, it can collect customer feedback from across Slack, email, and notifications pages, analyze it in aggregate, organize it into a structured database, and even send notifications.
It can also automatically convert meeting notes into proposals and to-do lists, update outdated documents with the latest information, and more. You can give this agent personalized instructions, such as your work style and priorities, and you can even customize its name and appearance. As you set up memories in the form of pages, the agent gradually gets smarter and more in tune with your style.
Not only for individual users, but also for teams. Notion will soon introduce the ability to create multiple "custom agents" that fulfill different roles beyond your personal agent. For example, you can create an agent that collects user feedback at specific times, an agent that reports on project status on a weekly basis, an agent that automatically triages IT requests, and so on, for your entire team to utilize.
Notion 3.0 also introduces per-row permissions for databases, connectivity to external AI tools, and a variety of MCP integrations, all based on user feedback. The new features are already available to select users and will be rolled out to users globally over time.
"3.0 is just the beginning, and we'll continue to evolve so you can focus more on what you really want to do," says Notion. As AI evolves from an assistant to a "do the work" colleague, Notion's vision of the future of task automation is exciting.
