Nothing Ear (3) launches, a charging case that records

Nothing has officially launched its next generation of wireless earphones, the Ear(3), with improvements in sound, battery, and call quality compared to previous models, but the most notable change is the Super Mic feature, which puts the microphone in the charging case rather than the earphones, enabling calls and voice recording.

The EARS(3) are the first Nothing product to feature recycled aluminum on the bottom of the case. The body of the earphones also has metallic accents, and the unit shape has been refined for a more comfortable fit. Each earphone is equipped with 12mm drivers for improved bass response and spaciousness, and call quality is enhanced with bone conduction voice pickup and an AI noise cancellation system. Noise canceling works in real-time up to 45dB and continuously analyzes your surroundings and earphone fit to adjust performance.

The feature to watch out for is the 'Super Mic'. Pressing the 'Talk' button on the case activates the case's dual microphones (not the earphones), and when held close to your mouth, you'll be able to speak clearly with up to 95dB of ambient noise cut out. It's not just for talking, but also for recording voice memos, calling voice assistants, and automatic recording and transcription in conjunction with Nexus OS's 'Essential Space' app.

However, there are limitations to app compatibility. While it works with major apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Google Meet, the case mic may not work with some social media voice messaging or camera apps.

The basic specs have also been beefed up. Bluetooth 5.4-based multipoint connectivity and support for SBC, AAC, and LDAC codecs. Each earphone has a 55 mAh battery for up to 5.5 hours of ANC, 10 hours of continuous use when off, and up to 38 hours with the case. The case houses a 500mAh battery and supports both fast and wireless charging.

However, the ear tips do raise some concerns. Some users find it difficult to get a full seal with the stock tips, so they use third-party tips, which some say compromises initial sound quality and noise canceling performance.

The Ears(3) come in two colors, black and white, and are priced at $179. They are available on the official Nothing website and Amazon, and will be available worldwide starting September 25th.

Known for its transparent design and unique features, Nothing continues its 'think different' brand identity. The unconventional idea of using a case as a microphone instead of an earphone may be a hit or miss, but it's definitely a refreshing take on the market.
