Audiotechnica has unveiled Hotaru, a work that redefines what it means to listen to analog music. Unveiled at Milan Design Week 2025, the turntable is more than just an audio device - it's an installation and object that embodies a ritual of light and sound. Hotaru means "firefly" in Japanese, and the name embodies the fleeting and brilliant sensation of a moment in time.
The Hotaru has a magnetic levitation structure that allows the entire platter to float away from the body, giving the impression of being suspended in mid-air. Utilizing magnetic repulsion, this structure delivers sound that is completely isolated from external vibrations, creating an experience that is both physically and visually like music floating on top of tranquil silence. To add to this, the lighting system inside the body responds to the music in real time, orchestrating 20 different colors of light. Listeners can choose between basic mode, gradient mode, and linked mode, which synchronizes with the music, creating a space where music and light breathe together.
Hardware-wise, the Hotaru is fully equipped as a high-performance analog playback machine. The carbon tonearm, VM cartridge, and belt-driven DC servo motor support 33 1/3 and 45 RPM, while the built-in full-range speaker and tweeter deliver a wide frequency response from 60Hz to 20kHz. The aluminum and acrylic chassis rests on solid brass feet to minimize resonance and maximize acoustic performance.
Audiotechnica wanted to make Hotaru more than just a music playing device, but a ritual of the senses. The installation space, inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony, leads the audience along a 'lodge'-like path, while ambient sounds - a mix of water droplets, sand dunes, and bells - weave together spaces, people, and moments into a single piece of music. Even the breathing and footsteps of visitors are recorded in real time and etched onto vinyl, transforming the performance into a record of the very air of the moment.
Hotaru will be limited to just 1,000 units, priced at $9,999 USD (plus tax). The first round of reservations closed on May 30, and the second round will be open until September 22. The purchase process will begin in October and deliveries will begin in November.
