YouTube Hype Launches Cheering Feature for New Channels

YouTube has officially launched "Hype," a feature designed to strengthen support for emerging creators worldwide. First unveiled at last year's "Made on YouTube" event, the feature is designed to help creators with under 500,000 subscribers gain more visibility. This global expansion brings the service to 39 countries, including the US, UK, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and India.

Hype works simply. Viewers can hype up to three videos each week, earning points for those videos. These points are reflected in the new leaderboard rankings within YouTube's "Explore" menu, leading to increased exposure. Creators with fewer subscribers earn larger bonuses when they receive Hype, lowering the barrier to entry and creating a fair opportunity for growth.

The fan experience has also been enhanced. A dedicated hype button has been added to the bottom of videos for easier engagement, and hyped videos are marked with a "Hyped" badge. You can also filter by the "Hyped" category on the home screen and receive notifications when a video you've hyped reaches the top of the leaderboard. Passionate fans can earn a "Hyped Star" badge each month to showcase their activity.

Creators can now check the number of hype points and ratings each video has received in real time through the YouTube Studio mobile app. A new "Hype Card" has been added to the Analytics menu, and related information can also be found in the weekly summary data. This is expected to help creators closely track fan engagement and optimize their content strategy.

YouTube plans to introduce leaderboards based on specific interests, such as gaming style and music, and introduce features that allow fans to more easily share hyped videos. Furthermore, the company is expanding its paid hype feature, currently being piloted in Brazil and Turkey, with the potential for future development into new revenue models.

This move goes beyond simple fan engagement and represents a significant shift that will rebalance the YouTube ecosystem. It breaks away from the competitive structure centered on large channels and creates a space where even smaller creators can thrive, leveraging the power of their fandom. Fans can directly support the growth of their favorite creators, and creators can leverage their fan support to reach greater heights.

The global expansion of the Hype feature appears to be a strategy to strengthen YouTube's identity as a platform connecting creators and viewers. It remains to be seen how this feature will evolve and what changes it will bring to the overall creator economy.
