Instagram Launches Controversial Maps Feature

Instagram has launched a new feature, "Instagram Map," which allows users to share their recent activity with friends and explore location-based content. It's rolling out first in the US and will soon expand globally. The map can be accessed at the top of direct messages (DMs), and you can also leave short messages called "Notes" on the map.

Location sharing is turned off by default and requires user consent to be enabled. Location updates are not real-time, but only when the app is opened. Sharing can be limited to mutual followers or a list of designated users. However, once enabled, location-tagged Stories, Reels, and posts will appear on the map for 24 hours. Experts point out that users often don't fully understand their privacy settings, which can lead to information leaks.

Professor Douglas Zaiko of the University of Michigan explains that users have difficulty controlling the visibility of content across groups, calling this "context collapse." Robbie Toney of Common Sense Media warns that sharing locations can create social pressure and safety issues for young people. They might feel pressured to show off their location, or they might be exposed to harassment or stalking if they selectively choose not to share.

Instagram also introduced a "Repost" feature inspired by TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) in this update. You can now reshare public Reels or feed posts to your friends' feeds, and they'll also appear in a dedicated tab on your profile. We've also expanded the "Friends" tab globally, allowing you to see public Reels your friends have liked, commented on, or reposted. You can control the visibility of this tab in your settings.

As a result, Instagram has released features that could replace Snapchat's 'Snap Map' and the old Zenly, but it has also raised controversies about user privacy and youth safety.
