Microsoft has officially introduced "Copilot Mode" to Edge. Users no longer have to manually navigate the web by switching between dozens of tabs. Instead, they can use "Agent Browsing," where AI actively gathers, compares, and supports decision-making through information gathering.
Copilot mode opens a new tab in Edge, offering a streamlined interface with a single input field and integrated chat, search, and web browsing. It aggregates and compares information from multiple sites based on user requests, and even supports voice commands. For example, if a user has multiple accommodation sites open and says, "Recommend accommodations near the beach with fully equipped kitchens," Copilot will analyze all tabs and present the most appropriate options.
These features are based on Multi-Tab Augmented Generation (RAG) technology. With the user's permission, Copilot analyzes the content of all open tabs, removes redundant information, and provides context-based summaries. This reduces repetitive tasks and facilitates better decisions in a variety of situations, including shopping, traveling, and researching dissertations.
Furthermore, the "Contextual AI Actions" feature goes beyond simple Q&A to enable complex tasks like reservations and schedule management using natural language. Saying "Find places to rent paddleboards near my workplace" will allow Copilot to locate nearby rental shops, check the weather, and even recommend relevant tutorials.
The browser interface has also been revamped. Copilot can now be accessed immediately from the address bar and sidebar, providing essential information in dynamic windows while preserving the original webpage. This helps you quickly grasp the key points of long blog posts or complex recipe pages.
Copilot features are activated only with the user's explicit consent, and data access permissions can be set by the user. Any actions requiring access to browser history or authentication credentials are performed with full consent and visual cues.
Copilot mode is currently available for free on Edge for Windows and Mac, with some features being limited. Microsoft has hinted at the possibility of moving the feature to a paid subscription model in the future. You can currently enable the feature on the copilot-mode page or in Edge browser settings.
