Lightphone has unveiled the Lightphone III, a smartphone for digital detox. The touchscreen smartphone features a large matte OLED display and the LightOS system. The screen is a black and white digital screen similar to an e-ink display. The new model adds a USB-C port, fingerprint recognition, 5G connectivity, an NFC chip, and a click wheel for flashlight function.
On the back is a camera with film camera functions. Unlike conventional cameras, this product has a dual-action shutter button. Half-pressing it focuses, and fully pressing it takes a photo or records a video. The basic resolution is 12 megapixels (4,000 x 3,000 pixels) and utilizes a 50-megapixel sensor. On the front is an 8-megapixel camera.
The body is made of metal, and the battery cover and speaker grille are made of Sony SORPLAS recycled plastic. A click wheel that can adjust the screen brightness is also applied. Users can replace the battery by unscrewing the screws, and the screen and USB port are also serviceable.
The Light Phone III does not support features commonly found on modern smartphones, such as internet browsing, email, news, and advertising. It does support GPS, Bluetooth, fingerprint recognition, noise-cancelling microphone, voice-to-text, and personal hotspot, but it does not support music streaming services, messaging apps, or taxi-hailing services.
Currently only the English keyboard and language are available, but received messages can be displayed in a variety of languages and characters. Additional language support is being considered.
The specs include 5G support, a 3.92-inch AMOLED display, 128GB of storage, and 6GB of RAM. It has dual microphones and stereo speakers, but doesn’t support external memory. There’s no headphone jack, but you can use wired headphones via the USB-C port.
The Lightphone III will begin shipping to pre-order customers in March 2025, with general availability starting in June 2025.
