Now you can use ChatGPT on your phone. US users can call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) from their landline to talk to the AI assistant for free. This feature started out as an OpenAI Hacking Week project and can handle simple questions and translations.
OpenAI says its goal is to help more people experience AI. Calls are limited to 15 minutes per phone number per month, and you can create a separate account for additional use. OpenAI notes that carrier fees may apply.
ChatGPT is also available on WhatsApp. Users can start a text-based conversation by adding 1(800) CHATGPT to WhatsApp, and it can be used without an account. The WhatsApp version has a daily usage limit, and when the limit is reached, a notification will be sent to switch to the desktop or app. OpenAI has said that it plans to add features such as image analysis and web search to WhatsApp, but has not disclosed a release date.
Kevin Wyle, OpenAI’s chief product officer, described the project as a starting point for making ChatGPT more accessible. Wyle described it as an experimental feature that leverages OpenAI’s real-time API and the WhatsApp API, and said the company will continue to expand the user experience.
