Shopify has released 'The Boring Edition' for 2025, featuring over 150 updates. Despite the humorous title, the updates take a pragmatic approach and focus on making the existing platform faster, more efficient, and more user-friendly.
The landing page is designed in a way that makes it hard to believe that it was created in 2024. It is a form that shows the structure and function as it was when the web first appeared, without any decoration. It seems like a possible strategy because it targets B2B users who value fast and accurate functions, unlike B2C users who value cognitive convenience and enjoyment. It reminds me of a website called craiglist that never updates its design, but still gets a lot of traffic.
Major improvements for merchants
Shopify's checkout experience is now up to 50% faster. Cart loading speeds and checkout button responsiveness have been significantly improved, reducing shopping abandonment and improving customer experience.
Payment blocks are now available on all plans, allowing you to personalize your thank you page or add post-checkout promotions. Chat integration has also been introduced, allowing customers to get real-time support during checkout. Draft order functionality has also been enhanced, giving merchants more flexibility in managing complex transactions.
The customer account system has also been upgraded. Customers can log in, track orders, and process returns from a single interface, while merchants can collect customer feedback and improve their products and services.
Shopify POS, which supports offline sales, has also been improved. Sellers can process transactions efficiently through product bundling and split-screen checkout, and use metafields to provide personalized services based on customer data.
New tools for automation and developers
Shopify Flow reduces the time merchants need to manage their stores by automating tasks. Marketing tasks like handling returns and exchanges and sending abandoned cart emails can be easily set up with pre-built templates.
For developers, the checkout development process has also been streamlined. New chat UI components allow you to integrate live support into your checkout and thank you pages. And Shopify Functions and checkout extensions provide a consistent user experience across all sales channels.
Storefront tools have also been enhanced. Liquid DX supports auto-completion and debugging, and integrates with GraphQL APIs to reduce API calls. Shopify CLI supports instant server startup and removes Ruby dependencies for easier setup.
