Google and Samsung have collaborated to unveil the next-generation mixed reality platform, Android XR, and the headset, Project Moohan. Android XR is a new operating system designed to be integrated with Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform, Gemini, and is scheduled for release in 2025.
Project MoohanThe device will provide an immersive VR and reality-blending experience, supporting voice recognition, hand gestures, and eye tracking, and will be powered by Qualcomm’s advanced chipset. Samsung also unveiled AR glasses alongside the headset. With a design similar to Ray-Ban Meta, the glasses will display features like Google Maps directions in real time on the lenses. Project Moohan and the AR glasses are expected to undergo small-scale user testing next year, with a full launch in 2025.
Android XRprovides a new user interface for extended reality (XR). Users can freely interact with apps using finger gestures, and Google’s core services (Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google TV, etc.) are optimized for the XR environment. Existing mobile and tablet apps are also supported, providing a familiar experience for both developers and users.
Android XR, integrated with the AI platform Gemini, analyzes the user’s intent and provides personalized assistance for tasks, information search, and schedule management. For example, YouTube and Google TV are reborn as large virtual screens, and Google Maps is reborn as an immersive city exploration tool. Gestures enable new ways of interacting, such as exploring specific objects or getting more information.
Developers at Google ARCore, Android Studio, Unity, OpenXR You can easily develop apps and games based on Android XR using familiar tools. The XR ecosystem is expected to expand further through collaboration with global partners such as Samsung, Qualcomm, and Magic Leap.
