Figma AI Service Discontinued: Apple App Copycat Controversy

One of Figma's AI functions, 'Make Design', has been temporarily suspended. Figma received a lot of attention at its 2024 conference when it unveiled a feature that creates application drafts by simply entering simple sentences. It was released to a limited number of people as a beta service, but the service was recently suspended due to controversy over app imitation.

Andy Allen, who runs startup Notboring Software, found that an app he created using AI was similar to Apple's iOS app. Andy Allen entered the text "not boring weather app." The result was almost identical in appearance and composition to Apple's weather app. It seems that it learned from the existing app, as it created almost the same composition even after repeating it three times.

There has been growing concern among designers that using Figma AI could lead to plagiarism. Dylan Field, CEO of Figma, said it was “a mistake on my part to rush it out without going through rigorous quality assurance to fit it into a conference.” He said he would disable it until he could be confident in the results.

AI will eventually have to imitate what already exists because it will give an average correct answer with a high probability of not being wrong. In the end, input is important to create better results. In the future, it seems that not only AI functions but also the database that serves as the source will be important. That is why Adobe and Figma are trying to collect user-created results for various production tools.

Previously, the service fee that free users had to pay was 'viewing ads', but now it could be 'providing data'. If AI does not become an open infrastructure like the Internet, it seems like it will be self-destructing for creators.
