OpenAI announced 'Intelligent UI,' which composes ChatGPT's responses into visual elements and interactive screens. This feature was released alongside GPT-6 on October 7, 2026. Depending on the question, it combines text, graphics, buttons, input forms, and charts to create interfaces usable within the conversation.
The format of the answer varies depending on what the user intends to do. For comparison questions, information is placed side-by-side, and manipulative diagrams are used when explaining principles. For travel plans, a map showing transit points can be included. For questions where a written explanation is appropriate, the answer is provided in text.
Users can also verbally request necessary tools. Official examples introduced include a calculator for dividing meal costs, a tool for tracking changes in savings, and games that run during conversations. Along with a method of asking follow-up questions after reading an explanation, a method of checking results by changing on-screen input values is also provided.
The core of the design is that the layout and manipulation method of information are configured together for each question. To this end, OpenAI created a library of common screen elements. The model selects and arranges these elements. Since screens appear sequentially in accordance with answer generation, display begins even before the entire content is complete.
The training process included procedures to evaluate the clarity, usability, and completeness of the screen. In addition to the order of information and visual elements, the training also covered when to include interactions and when to respond with text. OpenAI stated that it plans to continue improving the model's design judgments and generation scope.
The feature will be rolled out sequentially to the Chat tab in ChatGPT. Rollout begins on October 7 for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, and on October 8 for Free and Go. Availability for Enterprise depends on the access permissions set by the administrator.
