Spotify Launches Prompt Playlists

Spotify is expanding its AI-powered personalization capabilities and piloting Prompted Playlists. This feature allows users to input their desired mood and context via text, and Spotify generates playlists based on their listening history and music trends.

Spotify reportedly began initial testing with premium users in New Zealand in December 2025. It then officially announced that it would gradually expand the beta to premium users in the US and Canada as of January 22, 2026.

Prompted playlists are designed to reduce the manuality of existing automated recommendations, allowing users to set their own rules to adjust recommendations. Users can add conditions, such as adding songs they haven't yet listened to, based on artists they've listened to frequently in the last five years. Completed playlists can be set to refresh daily or weekly, ensuring they remain relevant over time.

Mobile Premium users can activate the feature via the Create button in their library and edit the prompt after creation. They also provide a one-line note explaining why the song was included, along with the ability to turn the note display on and off.

Spotify also noted that usage restrictions may apply as this is a beta feature, and deleted prompt playlists cannot be recovered. Currently, it is only available in English, Spotify said.
