OpenAI's audio wearable device, Sweet Pea‘

A series of leaks have emerged indicating that OpenAI is preparing a hardware ecosystem aligned with its ChatGPT subscription service. A January 16, 2026, report claims an audio wearable codenamed "Sweetpea" is in development, targeting Apple's AirPods.

Unlike typical in-ear earbuds, the Sweet Pea is designed to rest behind the ear rather than inside it. This allows for a larger battery and processor footprint, which is said to benefit the always-on AI assistant.

The leaked images reveal elements believed to be ultrasonic transmitters and signal collection sensors. This suggests the device could expand beyond a simple audio playback device to include environmental sensing and contextual understanding.

The launch date is projected to be around September 2026. Some also claim a first-year shipment target of 40 to 50 million units. However, as OpenAI's first wearable, its feasibility remains to be seen.

Signs of hardware expansion are also being detected in the data center sector. According to analysis citing supply chain reports, OpenAI is working with Broadcom on an AI ASIC codenamed Titan, with a potential release date of late 2026, using TSMC's 3nm process. This is interpreted as an attempt to reduce dependence on NVIDIA GPUs and improve costs and negotiating power.

A screenless pocketable device codenamed Gumdrop was also mentioned as a consumer device. Its launch is slated for 2026 or 2027, and it features a scenario that combines cloud computing with on-device processing, centered around sensors and voice-based interactions.

Meanwhile, OpenAI's hardware initiatives have been consistently mentioned in the context of its collaboration with Jony Ive. Following reports that OpenAI was pursuing the acquisition of Ive's device startup, io, speculation has grown that a physical AI product line could be in full swing.

However, this information is based on leaks and speculation, not an official announcement. Product form, chip specifications, and production plans are subject to change, and it remains to be seen how OpenAI will integrate ChatGPT subscriptions with hardware.
