OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Health, a new service designed to help people securely manage and understand their personal health information. ChatGPT Health connects personal medical records and wellness data with ChatGPT's intelligence to provide a more systematic understanding of health.
Health and wellness are already one of ChatGPT's most popular areas of use. According to OpenAI, more than 230 million users worldwide ask ChatGPT health-related questions every week. ChatGPT Health aims to expand this usage flow, providing responses that reflect users' actual health information and context.
This service securely integrates electronic medical records with wellness apps like Apple Health and MyFitnessPal. Users can receive assistance understanding test results, preparing for medical appointments, and developing diet and exercise plans. It can also be used to organize information for healthcare service selection, such as comparing insurance plans. ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and is designed to complement the role of healthcare professionals.
Privacy and security are central to the service design. ChatGPT Health operates as a separate space within ChatGPT, and health-related conversations and data are stored separately from other chats. These conversations are not used for model training, and specialized encryption and isolation structures for health data are applied. Users can review or delete health-specific memory at any time.
During the development of ChatGPT Health, OpenAI collaborated with over 260 medical professionals from 60 countries around the world. These medical professionals reviewed model responses across dozens of specialties, providing feedback focused on safety and clarity. These findings were incorporated into the model design through HealthBench, a clinical criteria-based evaluation framework.
ChatGPT Health is currently available to a small number of early users and will be expanded to web and iOS in the coming weeks. Electronic health record integration and some apps are only available in the US, and Apple Health integration requires an iOS device. OpenAI plans to continue expanding the available data and insights to help users better understand their health and healthcare choices.
