Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky has given a sneak peek at the company’s new design system. The announcement, shared via X in a short video format, appears to be a response to user feedback following the company’s larger app update last summer.
“Thank you for your feedback on our summer release design work,” Chesky begins the video, giving a brief overview of the key elements of Airbnb’s new design system, which includes a new typeface, navigation, layout system, color palette, card styles, and even icon designs.
In this video, Chesky suggests that the new design system is not just a change in appearance, but an attempt to reconfigure Airbnb’s entire user experience. It seems intended to strengthen the design identity while ensuring more intuitive usability and visual consistency.
Last summer, Airbnb rolled out a comprehensive update to its app, making the search for accommodations more intuitive and improving the booking experience. It received mixed responses from users, and Chesky seems to have taken that feedback and refined the design direction.
The video released this time only contains a portion of the design system, not the entire system, so it is possible that more detailed, technical content will be released in the future.
Airbnb has been a company that has adopted service design as one of its core strategies, and has built a consistent user experience in both branding and interface. This new design system is expected to be a turning point that will simultaneously improve user convenience and aesthetic perfection.
