Google is taking AI-based search to a new level with the introduction of a voice-based search feature called Search Live on its mobile apps. The feature is currently only available in the US and will be available to Android and iOS users who have participated in the “AI Mode” experiment.
Search Live is a feature that allows users to ask questions as if they were talking to Google, receive voice responses, and continue the conversation. Unlike conventional search methods, real-time voice conversations are possible without the need for separate typing, and the conversation content continues without interruption even if the app is closed or switched to another app. In addition, the 'transcript' feature allows free switching between voice and text, and conversation records can be saved for later viewing.
Tapping on the new “Live” icon below the search bar in the Google app activates a full-screen voice interface, where AI provides real-time voice responses to user questions, along with links to relevant websites. The interface has a similar design to the existing “Gemini Live.”
This Search Live is based on Google’s Gemini AI model, but is equipped with a customized version optimized for voice interaction. Google emphasized that the key to this feature is that it supports natural and continuous conversation flow beyond simple commands. In addition, a camera function is scheduled to be installed through an update in the future, so it will be possible to ask questions about the scene the user is viewing.
Some have raised concerns that Search Live and Gemini Live may be confusing to users because they operate separately while providing similar features. However, Google is interpreting Search Live as a strategy to more actively integrate conversational AI technology into its search function.
