iOS 17 official update: The iPhone you use even when you’re not using it

iOS 17 was officially updated on the 18th. iPad OS 17 and watchOS 10 were also released. You can actually use the features you saw in the beta. In particular, new experiences in communication and iPhone charging are smooth and enjoyable. The iOS 17 update is available for iPhone XR and later models and iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation models and later.

You can now customize the screen that the caller sees. You can fill the background with photos and decorate it with your Memoji and typography.

You can answer calls and leave messages or voice messages by sliding the button. Voice messages, which are widely used overseas, now automatically generate transcriptions that can be read in writing.

When using FaceTime, you can also leave video messages. You can also express various animation effects with simple gestures.

Filters for searching messages are becoming more sophisticated. Communication using stickers has been strengthened, and you can create stickers by separating subjects from photos in your album. You can create GIF-like effects and use them in your messages.

You can easily share your information with Airdrop. Using the name drop function, you can pass on your contact information by simply hovering over another user's iPhone. You can enjoy content, music, videos, and games together with the same gesture. In the second half of the year, they plan to deploy a sharing function even outside of the airdrop scope.

Standby is an extension that allows you to use your iPhone even when it is not in use. Standby is a function that displays various information when the iPhone is placed horizontally and charging. You can think of it as playing a similar role to a smart home device. It displays the current status of not only the clock but also several apps in context. It is always displayed and the color is displayed differently depending on the surrounding brightness.

📕 Editor's Notes

Apple's restriction strategy still appears to be going strong. It seems that carefully designing an attractive experience and making it available only to people who use Apple services will make it more popular. There will be more changes in the future to further expand the highly sophisticated iPhone experience.

It is predicted that the experience using only smartphones will have limitations, and the combination with new hardware/software will provide a new lifestyle. Wireless earphones have been a huge success, but I think challenges will continue in the smart home and XR/AR areas, which have not yet shown clear usability.
