Developer Brandon Thomas has unveiled Artcraft, an open-source project created with the goal of serving as an alternative to seven major Adobe programs. Introduced to the online community in early October 2026, the project distributes its source code and installation files on GitHub. The developer stated that the project was built in the Rust language with the assistance of Claude.

The suite includes PhotoCraft for photo editing, VectorCraft for vector work, and FilmCraft for video editing. It also includes apps compatible with Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat. It can be used without a subscription, and you can modify the released code or continue it as a separate project.

The interface follows the work habits of existing users. Photocraft adopts the menus, panels, and shortcut layouts familiar from Photoshop. Vectorcraft also follows the tool configuration used in Illustrator, such as the pen, direct selection tool, pathfinder, and layers. The focus was on transferring existing workflows rather than proposing new manipulation methods.

According to the official description, PhotoCraft provides layers, masks, and adjustment layers, and can open and save PSD files. It processes operations locally and provides distributions for Mac, Windows, and Linux. As of October 19, the PhotoCraft repository had approximately 67,500 GitHub stars.

However, the disclosed list of features does not imply the same level of completeness as Adobe products. The development team has described PhotoCraft as being in an early alpha stage. They explain that there are shortcomings in generative AI, some tools, typography, and plugin compatibility, and that it is not currently at a level to replace Photoshop for professional work.
