In a technical introduction released on June 26, 2026, the company announced that the R2 uses a new software foundation and a new UI. Rivian OS 2.0 is an interface created directly by Rivian&#039;s software and design teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new operating system focuses on transforming the central display experience. Rivian explained that the R2&#039;s 15.6-inch center display utilizes Unreal Engine 5 to provide a more visual representation of vehicle settings. The layout has also been changed to make frequently used functions easier to find. An 11.5-inch driver display is included in front of the driver&#039;s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rivian OS 2.0 was designed in conjunction with the vehicle&#039;s hardware. The R2&#039;s steering wheel features Haptic Halo Wheels. These controls support scrolling, pressing, pulling, and tilting actions and are used to operate the climate control, media, and driving modes. It is a method that links screen animations with physical haptic feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rivian explains that R2 expands from software-defined vehicles to AI-defined vehicles. R2 features 200 sparse TOPS-class edge AI compute for the in-car experience. Rivian Assistant is a system that controls functions inside the vehicle using voice commands. According to the company&#039;s Q2 2026 data, this feature was available across the entire R1 and is scheduled to be introduced in R2 by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rivian OS relies on OTA updates. The R1 software update released in February 2026 included the Apple Watch app, adjustment of driving modes during driving assistance, improvements to Kneel Mode, and winter battery indicators.
