The OpenAI Developers account released a short teaser video with the caption “Frequently used Codex shortcuts are being upgraded,” indicating July 15 as the release date. The video featured a small keyboard-shaped device with multiple buttons.

This product is known as the Codex Micro. OpenAI is preparing this device in collaboration with Work Louder, a keyboard and macro pad manufacturer. According to Business Insider, OpenAI explained that the product is “designed to enable people to use the Codex more powerfully.”.

The Codex Micro is closer to a dedicated shortcut controller for developers than a standard keyboard. The revealed silhouette resembles Work Louder's Creator Micro 2, and this product line utilizes mechanical keys, a joystick, and touch sensors to assign app-specific shortcuts and macros.

What is interesting is that OpenAI aims to extend the Codex user experience to actual physical input devices, rather than through AI models or software functions. While AI coding tools perform increasingly complex tasks on behalf of users, users still have to make repetitive decisions such as approval, modification, revert, redo, and parallel execution. Codex Micro can be seen as an attempt to shift these repetitive operations from on-screen buttons to a tangible physical interface.

However, this product is separate from the consumer AI device currently being prepared by Jony Ive and OpenAI. Rather than a mass-market AI device, this device is closer to a specialized accessory targeting developers who frequently use the Codex and the 'Vive Coding' user base.

More and Sources

https://www.instagram.com/p/DaLWruxtU_r/

OpenAI가 AI 코딩 도구 Codex를 위한 새로운 하드웨어를 예고했습니다.
