The open-source AI agent project OpenClaw has released standalone apps for iOS and Android. Users can now interact directly with OpenClaw on their smartphones and connect certain device functions to the AI agent. The OpenClaw app is designed to allow users to grant access permissions to the camera, screen, location, photos, contacts, calendar, reminders, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenClaw is not just a simple chatbot, but a personal AI agent that handles tasks on behalf of the user. The official website describes OpenClaw as \u201cAI that actually does work,\u201d introducing its ability to manage tasks such as organizing emails, sending mail, managing calendars, and checking in for flights. While the focus previously was on interacting with the agent through messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord, the launch of this mobile app has made the smartphone itself the agent\u2019s new operating environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OpenClaw app for Android is listed on Google Play. According to the description, users can connect their OpenClaw Gateway to the app to use chat, voice mode, job approval, and device-based automation. The app connects to the Gateway via a QR code or configuration code, and device features such as camera, screen, location, and notifications are enabled only when selected by the user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The significance of this launch lies in the fact that AI agents have moved beyond desktops or servers and into the user's most personal device: the smartphone. Smartphones contain information closely tied to daily life, such as contacts, schedules, photos, location, and notifications. When AI gains access to this information, it moves beyond a simple answering tool to become a personal assistant that understands the user's context and leads to actual actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the risks have also increased. OpenClaw emphasizes a local-first structure operated directly by the user. The Google Play description also states that users directly control the Gateway, Keys, Settings, and Permissions. However, when AI agents gain device permissions and automation capabilities, the approval UX for determining which actions to allow becomes much more critical. This is because accidentally granting incorrect permissions or linking malicious skills could put both personal information and actual account behavior at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenClaw is a project that garnered significant attention early this year. Founder Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI last February and announced plans to move OpenClaw into a foundation format while maintaining its independence as an open-source project.
