While the existing Siri was closer to a voice assistant that listened to commands and executed predefined functions, the new Siri AI has shifted toward understanding personal contexts such as the user's screen, apps, messages, photos, and calendar to handle more complex requests.

The biggest change is the way it converses. Siri AI provides answers by referencing both the user's previous conversations and the current screen. For example, it finds an address in a message and adds it to an event, answers questions based on information in photos, or detects and notifies the user of changes on web pages. It is a structure where Siri connects the information that the user previously had to search for manually by switching between multiple apps.

Apple has integrated this feature into Apple Intelligence. Siri AI works across Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro, and visionOS 27 also unveiled a dedicated Siri app and visual intelligence features. Users can connect with Siri to interact not only with digital screens but also with information from physical spaces.

The key point of this announcement is that Apple has integrated AI into the operating system experience rather than as a separate service. While ChatGPT or Gemini work by opening an app and asking a question, Siri AI operates within the screen the user is already viewing and the app they are using. Instead of the AI being the destination, it takes on the role of reducing user interaction behind the scenes.

Apple has also re-emphasized privacy protection. Apple Intelligence has promoted a structure that protects data by handling tasks within the device and utilizing methods like Private Cloud Compute when larger computations are required. Since accessing sensitive data such as emails, messages, calendars, and photos is necessary to deeply understand personal context, Apple faces the challenge of designing "personalized AI" and "privacy" together.

Siri AI marks a significant turning point for Apple. While Siri launched in 2011 and signaled the beginning of smartphone voice assistants, it has been criticized for lagging behind ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude in the generative AI competition over the past few years. This restructuring is an attempt by Apple to return to the center of the personal assistant market.

From a design perspective, the core of Siri AI lies in "contextual UX" rather than "conversational UI." The goal is to reduce the process of users pressing buttons, searching menus, and switching between apps. In the future, good interfaces are likely to move closer to understanding the user's intent first and suggesting necessary actions on their behalf, rather than displaying more screens.

For Siri AI to succeed, smart answers alone are not enough. Users must be able to know what information Siri is viewing, how far it can go in executing tasks on their behalf, and when user permission is required. The competitiveness of AI assistants will be determined not only by model performance but also by the design of reliable interactions.

More and Sources

https://www.apple.com/kr/newsroom/2026/06/apple-unveils-next-generation-of-apple-intelligence-siri-ai-and-more/
