OpenAI has launched Apple CarPlay support for ChatGPT. You can now run ChatGPT on your vehicle's display for voice conversations on supported iPhones running iOS 26.4 or later. The ChatGPT CarPlay feature is available on all ChatGPT plans worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key feature of this update is that ChatGPT can now be used more naturally inside a car. Users can open ChatGPT from the Apple CarPlay screen to start a new voice chat or continue a recent conversation. Conversations previously managed as projects can also be retrieved and used directly from within the vehicle. The default mode of use while driving is voice-centric rather than hand-centric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To use ChatGPT on CarPlay, there are a few requirements. First, you must have a supported iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later. Additionally, you need the latest version of the ChatGPT app, and your vehicle must support Apple CarPlay. Once these three conditions are met, you can start ChatGPT voice conversations even inside your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also relatively simple to use. Simply connect your iPhone to your vehicle and select ChatGPT in CarPlay. Then, tap New voice chat; once the connection status changes from Connecting to Listening, you can start a conversation immediately. If you want to continue an existing conversation, select a recent chat or a pinned chat. To start a new conversation within a specific project, select the desired project from the Projects tab and tap New voice chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on your settings, you can also open ChatGPT directly in voice mode on CarPlay. If you enable "Start automatically in CarPlay" under the Voice section in the iPhone ChatGPT app settings, the next time you launch ChatGPT on CarPlay, it will take you directly to the voice conversation screen. This is practical as it reduces the number of steps required for operation while driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are also clear limitations. ChatGPT CarPlay cannot access maps or real-time vehicle location information. It cannot control vehicle functions, nor can it operate other apps like Maps or Mail on its behalf. In other words, this feature is closer to expanding the in-car voice AI conversational experience than to direct integration with the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voice quality may vary from vehicle to vehicle. This is because it is affected by differences in the car's microphone performance, speaker configuration, and echo cancellation capabilities. In some cases, ChatGPT opens automatically when you get back in the car, which is due to CarPlay's default behavior of relaunching the last app used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ChatGPT CarPlay support is an update that makes it easier to utilize the AI voice assistant within Apple CarPlay. However, users who were expecting vehicle control and navigation integration will still find there are quite a few limitations. Nevertheless, it can be seen as a meaningful expansion in that it allows for easy continuation of ChatGPT voice conversations while driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
