Naver is making significant changes to the comment management system in its Politics and Elections sections ahead of the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections. It has decided not to provide comments at the bottom of article bodies in the Politics and Elections sections until the local elections conclude on June 3. This appears to be a decision aimed at addressing the heated public opinion war surrounding the election and the issue of malicious comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under this measure, users will no longer be able to view or write comments directly below the article body. However, the area displaying all comments will remain. This space will only provide sorting by newest date. The existing rules for posting comments will also be maintained. Only accounts that have completed identity verification will be allowed to leave up to three comments per article. In essence, this means that while the display at the bottom of the article has been closed, the comment function itself has not been completely eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naver plans to go a step further and strengthen its automated comment blocking system. In April, it is scheduled to introduce a feature that automatically closes comments on articles with a high proportion of malicious comments blocked by Cleanbot, an AI-based malicious comment detection system. Rather than a method where humans manage comments after the fact, the system is designed to preemptively close comment sections when it detects risk signals exceeding certain criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleanbot is an AI-based malicious comment detection system introduced by Naver in 2019, the first of its kind in the industry. Currently, it is strengthening its learning capabilities not only for profanity, sexually explicit content, and violent language, but also for hate speech, denigration, and discrimination. Naver stated that it is not limiting the application of this feature to just the politics and election sections, but is also considering expanding it to other news sections in the future. This means that if the proportion of comments blocked by Cleanbot exceeds a certain threshold, comments on an article can be closed regardless of whether it is a political article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
