Meta announced that it is testing a premium subscription model on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Meta plans to test different subscription features and bundles for each app in the coming months. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key pillar of Meta's subscription strategy is the expansion of Manus, a suite of AI agents it recently acquired. Meta is said to be pursuing a two-pronged strategy of integrating Manus into its services while continuing to sell standalone subscriptions to enterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AI-based video production feature Vibe is also being tested for monetization. According to reports, Vibe is discussing a plan where basic production would be free, with additional production opportunities available through a subscription service every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Instagram, reverse engineering analyst Alessandro Paluzzi noted that features like unlimited audience list creation, unfollower list access, and anonymous story viewing may be tested based on screens in development. However, the specific features for WhatsApp and Facebook remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta has emphasized that this subscription is separate from its existing paid service, Meta Verified. Building on the learnings gained from the Verified experience, which focuses on verification badges and customer support, Meta aims to expand the range of subscription products desired by general users, creators, and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The industry sees subscription fatigue as a factor, but reports that Snap Inc.'s Snapchat+ has more than doubled its initial 2024 subscriber count to over 16 million are cited as an example of the potential of a paid social media model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Manus acquisition also carries regulatory hurdles. Reuters reported that Chinese authorities are looking into Meta's acquisition of Manus due to potential violations of technology export controls, raising speculation that this could impact the future integration schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
