As Switzerland prepares to officially launch its national electronic identity (eID) system in 2026, the Federal Office for Information Technology and Communications (FOITT) and the Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) have unveiled the branding for the central wallet app, swiyu. Swiyu is the name of the federal government's digital wallet, and the eID rollout will be implemented in two phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The branding, based on surveys and tests targeting language groups across Switzerland, prioritized building trust. The visual identity was designed to ensure a consistent digital identity experience across channels, with core values of trust, Swissness, transparency, and future-oriented focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name "Swiyu" is a portmanteau of "Switzerland" and "you." SWI stands for "Switzerland," "I" for "I," "Innovation," and "YU" for "you." The logo, with the central "i" as its core element and nine vertical lines representing the repetition of the "i," evokes the Swiss cross and conveys the message that individuals, together, make up Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The color strategy focused on visualizing Switzerland's diversity. Two dynamic gradient layers were used to create countless combinations and reinforce the impression that each user has their own unique eID. In the app, the gradient moves with each touch on the eID area or tilt of the phone, intuitively conveying security and authenticity. \ufffc<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the operational side, we developed a separate graphics generator that generates infinite combinations, enabling rapid creation of video and image outputs tailored to specific situations. The app UI combines native specifications with SwiU's unique aesthetic, based on the iOS Human Interface Guidelines and Android Material Design. We also established a system that includes a Figma-based UI kit and design token icon documentation, enhancing development collaboration and scalability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FOITT and FOJ plan to establish standards for the use of logo fonts, color gradients, and motion icons through a brand book to support consistent application across public services. Switzerland has identified eID as a key initiative to strengthen digital sovereignty and is preparing to expand its ecosystem in line with its 2026 introduction schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
