OpenAI has introduced a group chat feature to ChatGPT. Users can now conduct simultaneous conversations with multiple people and ChatGPT in a single space. OpenAI stated that this feature expands ChatGPT beyond its role as a one-on-one assistant to a collaborative environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feature will be rolled out sequentially to all users on all subscription plans, including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. It was initially piloted in Japan, New Zealand, Korea, and Taiwan, and due to positive responses, it has been expanded to global availability. Up to 20 people can be invited, and anyone who receives an invitation link can join by setting up a simple profile. When you add someone to an existing conversation, the original conversation remains intact and is duplicated as a new group chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Group chats are useful for situations like coordinating travel itineraries, co-authoring documents, or team decision-making. Users can exchange messages and request specific analyses, summaries, or recommendations from ChatGPT. ChatGPT is trained to assess the flow of the conversation and decide whether to speak or take a break. To make a direct request, simply mention ChatGPT in a message. You can also respond to messages with emojis or generate images using participants' profile photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responses are selected and processed appropriately by the GPT 5.1 Auto model. Search functions, image uploads, image creation, and voice input are also available. While messages are not subject to token restrictions, ChatGPT responses are subject to restrictions based on the inviter's plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Privacy is also emphasized by design. Group chats are completely separate from private conversations, and the personal memory feature is not shared. ChatGPT does not store group chat content in memory and only uses information about group participants in the conversation flow. When minors are included, sensitive content is automatically restricted for all users. Parents or guardians can disable the group chat feature in settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI stated that with this feature, ChatGPT will evolve to become more proactive in real-world group conversations, assisting with planning, creation, and execution. Updates to create even more sophisticated collaborative environments are planned in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
