OpenAI has released "ChatGPT for Teachers," a dedicated service for US elementary, middle, and high school teachers. This service is available free of charge to verified US K-12 teachers until June 2027. Teachers can use the latest model, GPT-5.1 Auto, without messaging restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ChatGPT for Teachers provides a dedicated workspace where student data can be securely handled. OpenAI states that student information entered into this service is not used for learning purposes by default. Furthermore, it is designed to meet the standards of the US Student Education Rights Act (FERPA), making it easy to implement at the school and district level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers can reorganize lesson materials, create assessment questions, and design semester-long curricula in this space. By setting the app to remember your grade, subject, and preferred teaching format, you can receive more personalized support. It also includes the ability to import documents from Google Drive and Microsoft 365 and integrate with Canva to create presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School and education office administrators can register a domain to group faculty and staff into a single workspace. Role-based permission settings and SAML-based SSO-based account security are also supported. OpenAI is working with major US school districts to form an initial pilot group of approximately 150,000 students to verify its practical application in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers shared examples of how to use the system. This included designing a 20-day science unit, creating key questions for each day, and generating sample essay answers at different levels to establish student assessment criteria. Another application was the automatic mapping of the ISTE standards, the educational technology standards, to existing curricula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI emphasized the message that teachers should lead the use of AI. They explained that students are already growing up in an AI environment, and teachers have a role to play in establishing responsible use principles and teaching strategies. To this end, OpenAI, in collaboration with Common Sense Media, also released a foundational course for K-12 teachers and an AI literacy roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This service marks an expansion of OpenAI's education market, focusing on teachers, following the introduction of Study Mode for students and ChatGPT Edu for universities. While rival Google is expanding its Gemini-based education offerings, OpenAI is positioning itself as a strategic move to establish itself deeply in schools by providing teachers with a free yet secure platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
