Sony has unveiled the new RX1R III, its first premium compact camera in 10 years. Scheduled for release in late July 2025, the RX1R III is a high-performance camera that combines a 35mm full-frame sensor with 61 megapixels, AI autofocus, and a fixed Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens. The price is approximately $5,099.99, which is a significant increase from its predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of the RX1R III is Sony\u2019s latest BIONZ XR image processor and Exmor R CMOS sensor. The sensor eliminates the optical low-pass filter and has an anti-reflection coating to maximize resolution, contrast, and dynamic range. It offers up to 15 stops of dynamic range and excellent noise reduction even at high ISOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also features the AI processing unit that Sony's Alpha series uses. This function recognizes and tracks not only the body, face, and eye positions of people, but also animals, birds, insects, vehicles, trains, and airplanes. The AF covers approximately 78% of the frame with approximately 693 phase detection points. Stable tracking is possible even when the subject is partially obscured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it is a fixed lens camera, the 'step crop shooting' function allows you to select 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm angles of view through digital cropping. When shooting RAW, the crop range can be readjusted in post-processing, and the macro ring on the lens allows close-up shooting down to 20cm. The maximum magnification is 0.26x.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also worth noting are the 12 creative looks that can be applied to both photos and videos. FL2 is a retro expression with restrained colors, while FL3 provides more vivid and intense colors. Videos support 4K 30 frames 10-bit 4:2:2 shooting, and 1080p can be shot up to 120fps. However, log shooting is not supported, and S-Cinetone is provided instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design is made of magnesium alloy, and the top is flat and the dial and MI shoe are embedded in the body to maximize compactness. The grip and body texture also provide a more stable shooting feel. The electronic viewfinder is an XGA OLED with approximately 2.36 million dots and supports a 0.7x magnification, and the rear display is approximately 2.4 million dots, but lacks the tilt function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battery uses NP-FW50, and up to 270 shots can be taken using the viewfinder, and 300 shots using the LCD. Quick charging and external power supply are also possible via the USB-C port that supports USB PD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of sustainability and accessibility, the RX1R III is manufactured in a factory that uses 100% renewable energy, in line with Sony\u2019s \u201cRoad to Zero\u201d vision. The packaging uses environmentally friendly materials made from bamboo, sugarcane fiber, and recycled paper. It also features a screen reader and display magnification function for the visually impaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dedicated accessories will also be available, including the TG-2 thumb grip ($299.99) that attaches to the MI shoe, the LCS-RXL dedicated body case ($249.99), and the LHP-1 dedicated lens hood ($199.99), all of which are scheduled for release in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
