Shopify has officially eliminated the job title \u201cUX Designer\u201d and simply renamed it to \u201cDesigner.\u201d \u201cContent Designer\u201d has also been renamed to \u201cWriter.\u201d This has sparked a heated debate in the design industry about the identity and role of design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karl Rivera, Shopify\u2019s Chief Design Officer who led this change, explained the background through X. He said, \u201cThe term UX makes design closer to science than art, and limits the role of designers to being too functional.\u201d He went on to argue that, \u201cWith the advancement of AI, we have entered an era where anyone can create useful things, and designers must now lead differentiation through aesthetics, taste, and storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proponents<\/strong> They emphasize the emotional value and creativity of design. There has also been criticism that it is difficult to create excellent designs in a system that pursues results verified by experiments and data, and that designers are easily buried in the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title \u201cUX designer\u201d clearly indicates usability and user-centered problem solving, while the blanket term \u201cdesigner\u201d can obscure what is being designed.
