Apple announced a new operating system design at WWDC called 'Liquid Glass'. The design, which will be introduced across all platforms including iOS 26 for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV, is a visual interface that is shiny, translucent, and reflective like glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This design was inspired by Apple\u2019s spatial computing device, Vision Pro, which enhances the visual unity between existing devices while also suggesting the possibility of expansion to new devices such as AR glasses in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the biggest visual change since the flat design of iOS 7. In the past, skeuomorphism digitally reproduced the texture of real objects, but with the transition to flat design, it changed to simple shapes and minimal compositions. This time, it evolved into a more vivid interface that refracts light like a translucent glass plate and reacts in real time to the surrounding environment and user input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the lock screen, the time is displayed in San Francisco font with a glass effect, and the font thickness and shape change dynamically depending on the background image. A function that turns 2D photos into three-dimensional spatial scenes has also been introduced, creating harmony with the space-based UI. When playing music, the Apple Music Player reflects animations created by artists, enhancing visual immersion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The app icons have also been redesigned with a multi-layered glass effect, and a clear mode has been newly added in addition to the existing light and dark modes. The same liquid glass effect has been applied to major system areas such as the Control Center, notification panel, FaceTime, and Safari tab bar. All changes are open to developers through frameworks such as UIKit, SwiftUI, and AppKit, increasing UI consistency across the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mac operating system has been renamed macOS Tahoe 26. It has been enhanced with transparent menu bars and adjustable brightness settings, and the Spotlight search function has powerful integrated search and cloud-linked functions that cover the entire system. In addition, the shortcut function called 'Quick Key' and the clipboard history viewing function have been added to provide an advanced user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, just like the iPhone, the Mac gets a standalone Phone app, and real-time activity tracking features appear in the menu bar. Safari and Photos apps have also been redesigned based on Liquid Glass, and Apple Intelligence-based features like Message Translation, Image Creation, and Zenermoji are also introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
