'Thronglets', the pixel art retro game featured in the Netflix drama 'Black Mirror', has been released as a mobile game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This game is a fictional game that first appeared in the fourth episode of season 7, 'Plaything', and its development was halted due to the risk of the setting in the drama. However, with the airing of this season, Netflix's Night School Studio has produced an actual playable game and distributed it through the Netflix app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

'Thronglets' started out as a virtual pet game that combined Tamagotchi and simulation games, but over time it grew into a more complex structure with elements of strategy and resource management added in. Basically, the goal is to feed, wash, care for, and breed yellow pixel creatures. As the number of creatures increases, management becomes more difficult, and if you look away for a moment, they die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players can collect resources such as trees and gems, and build various facilities such as factories, amusement facilities, and bathhouses to create an efficient system. Upgrading factories increases production speed, but also has the side effect of causing pollution in the surrounding area, which is also connected to the ethical choices in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s unique is the dystopian twist typical of Black Mirror. Rather than being just characters, the Stronglets gradually become self-aware and begin to talk directly to the player. For example, when you discover that bones are more effective tools than wood, you\u2019ll be forced to decide whether to sacrifice a part of your life to gain resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also a number of Easter eggs hidden throughout the game that fans of the series will recognize. There\u2019s a White Bear symbol, a reference to the fictional game developer Tuckersoft, and Colin Littman from Bandersnatch making an appearance in the game. There are also hints about the setting of Plaything in the unlockable developer video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game is available for free on the Netflix app, with no ads or in-app purchases, and is available for download on both iOS and Android, but only for Netflix subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

'Thronglets' is evaluated as the culmination of Netflix's transmedia strategy that goes beyond a simple game and crosses drama and reality, fiction and reality. It is an extension of the experimental storytelling built with the existing 'Bandersnatch' and is drawing attention as a representative example of 'narrative-centered IP-linked games', which is one of Netflix's future game business directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
