Microsoft announced that it is introducing a new login UX for over 1 billion user accounts worldwide. The new login screen is designed based on Microsoft's design language, Fluent 2, and will be applied to most consumer accounts via web and mobile by the end of April 2025. It reminds me of the complex integration process of the 'unified account' that was often seen in Korean services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Microsoft has been continuously improving the user experience across various cloud-based environments, including Xbox, Windows, and Microsoft 365. This login UX includes design changes to reduce user errors during the authentication process and increase account recovery potential. The login flow has been streamlined and the amount of information per screen has been reduced to reduce cognitive burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new design is responsive and can adapt to various screen sizes, with a centralized structure that does not distract attention. It automatically supports light and dark modes based on customer feedback and is being applied first in gaming apps. The login screen is unified with a Microsoft-centric design rather than a product-specific one, strengthening brand consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new UX emphasizes passwordless authentication. Users can create an account using their existing email address and complete authentication with a one-time code. They are then prompted to add a passkey, which acts as a faster and more secure way to log in. If a passkey is available, it will be set as the default login method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This UX overhaul is rolling out first on Xbox Web and Mobile and is rolling out to other consumer apps later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
