Product Design for People Beyond Technology

Technology is advancing rapidly, and new tools are emerging every day. The way we build products, and even the products themselves, are constantly changing. So what should we do? The answer is to focus on what remains constant. What will remain constant in the future? The people who use our products.

The market has shifted from a supplier-centric to a consumer-centric one, and in this process, "understanding users" has become increasingly important. Ultimately, understanding human needs is key to creating outstanding products. To create products that solve problems, it's advantageous to learn from time-tested ideas.

No matter what waves come, as long as you have a surfboard that's one with you, you have nothing to fear. That's why we've organized a book club where we'll read books that capture the essence of product design. Through these books, we'll capture timeless concepts and discuss how they can be applied to the challenges we face.

Jongmin Park

A design leader who has achieved results at every stage of a startup from start to finish.
From being the first designer at a startup to directing the design of a team of 200, I've created design impact at every stage. My goal is to help people experience the world through design in a richer and more engaging way, and to create a design language that everyone can understand.

My first startup was co-founding Lineable, an IoT-based startup that uses Bluetooth location technology to prevent lost children. Later, I designed products and brands for Our Table, a service that provides special recipes for special occasions. Later, I joined the travel startup My Real Trip as a product designer and led the design team there. I also served as Head of Design at Healing Paper, which provides services for Gangnam Unnies. I currently run the design media company "Design Compass.".

Books to read together

The first book, Design and Seal Psychology by Donald Norman

Donald Norman Me | Park Chang-ho Station | Academic branch | 2016

This classic UX design book analyzes how people perceive and use products, and what they learn from their mistakes, from a psychological perspective. It emphasizes the core principle that good design is based on "usability" rather than aesthetics, offering crucial insights into understanding design principles ranging from everyday objects to digital interfaces.

Second book, Don't Make Me Think!

By Steve Krug | Translated by Im I-ryeong | Insight | 2014

It delves into the simple truth that users simply choose the easiest path without much analysis or deliberation. It explains, through practical examples, how to create "mindless experiences" on the web and in apps, presenting principles for intuitive UIs, streamlined navigation, and minimal friction.

The third book, 100 Facts About People Every Planner and Designer Should Know

Based on cognitive science and behavioral psychology, this book outlines 100 patterns that explain why people react and behave in certain ways. It explains how factors like vision, memory, emotion, choice, and motivation impact user experience, helping to improve user experience, persuade, and encourage repeat use.

The fourth book, Product design to solve

By Artyom Dasinski | Translated by Kim Jeong-hye | Gilbut | 2023

This book conveys the message that a successful product begins not with aesthetic perfection, but with problem-solving skills. This practical book guides you through the entire product design process, from identifying users' real pain points and validating hypotheses to MVP design, experimentation, and iterative learning, using case studies and practical guidance.
