Johnson & Johnson Rebranding: 135 Years of Lost Legacy

Johnson & Johnson, one of the world's largest healthcare companies, has rebranded. Used for over 130 years starting in 1887, co-founder James Wood Johnson's signature is slowly disappearing. They will continue to be seen in consumer products such as Kenvue's baby shampoo, Band-Aids, and Tylenol, but are predicted to disappear after stocks last.

Janssen, the pharmaceutical division of Johnson & Johnson, will become Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. The brand will integrate the medical technology division of Johnson & Johnson MedTech. The consumer division was spun off earlier this year under the name Kenvue.

Global pharmaceutical companies have changed their visual identities to express brands that meet their goals. France's Sanofi had technical-sounding lowercase text, and Britain's GSK had certain parts of its wordmark cut out. J&J deleted the wordmark it had used for 135 years and replaced it with a modern, single-stroke font. Johnson & Johnson, which represents a company that provides consumer goods, appears to want to become a brand that caters to pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

©Johnson & Johnson

A sans-serif, modern font with thin horizontal strokes and a slight bevel at the ends of the strokes. It is a font that gives the impression that it was written with a wide brush. We considered a logo that would be suitable for a digital-centric environment and one that does not involve learning cursive. They announced that they would reduce the display of the entire wordmark as much as possible and use the abbreviation J&J more often.

The character &, which represents and, is also an old expression, but it is said to have been designed to capture 'caring and human nature.'

📕 Editor's Notes

I wonder if it is the best choice. It seems like Coca-Cola has ditched its sans-serif logo. It can also be read as a message of denying the consumer goods that created Johnson & Johnson and focusing on new markets. Rather than giving the impression of taking a leap to a new future, it gives the impression of kicking down a ladder. It may be related to the recent review of baby powder products to determine whether they contain carcinogens.

The more abstract and intangible an element is, the more its value is determined by how meaning is given to it. If you don't value your brand, no one will value it. I feel regretful about the direction in which the legacy of the existing brand was to be inherited.

iOS 17 Emojis: Emojis Becoming a Design System

Ahead of World Emoji Day in 2023, Emojipedia has prepared a candidate for Unicode approval in September. Emojipedia has created its own sample to check out the change, which will be added to Apple's iOS 17.

It includes a face shaking its head, a phoenix, a lime, and a mushroom, as well as emojis depicting a variety of family members, and emojis including a person's full body that can be used on both the left and right sides.

👁️ Designer Eye

©Emojipedia

As you can see from Google's recently released 'Emoji Kitchen', existing emojis are combined to express new emojis. If the OS does not have new emojis registered, the two existing emojis will be displayed.

These joins are created with a Zero Width Joiner. Also known as 'zwidge', it is not an emoji and has no shape itself. Part of Unicode 1.1 in 1993 and added in Emoji 11.0 in 2018.

©Emojipedia

The noticeable change is the expression of direction. For a long time, emojis could only be used in a fixed orientation. The person running always ran to the left. You can now add directions to existing emojis to change the direction they move.

©Emojipedia

Not only the direction of movement but also the cultural characteristics of facial movements expressing positivity and negativity were taken into consideration. Nodding your head up and down means 'yes' in Korea, but in Bulgaria it means 'no'.

©Emojipedia

Among the newly added emojis, lime and mushroom are emojis that combine colors with existing emojis. You can add green to yellow limes or brown to red mushrooms. In addition, various family forms are expressed in silhouettes that do not indicate gender.

📕 Editor's Notes

Rather than inputting all images separately like Chinese characters, a system is being developed that combines existing keywords to express images. Although it is a technology that already existed, emojis are gradually taking the form of a design library that is widely used in UI.

iOS 17 official update: The iPhone you use even when you’re not using it

iOS 17 was officially updated on the 18th. iPad OS 17 and watchOS 10 were also released. You can actually use the features you saw in the beta. In particular, new experiences in communication and iPhone charging are smooth and enjoyable. The iOS 17 update is available for iPhone XR and later models and iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation models and later.

You can now customize the screen that the caller sees. You can fill the background with photos and decorate it with your Memoji and typography.

You can answer calls and leave messages or voice messages by sliding the button. Voice messages, which are widely used overseas, now automatically generate transcriptions that can be read in writing.

When using FaceTime, you can also leave video messages. You can also express various animation effects with simple gestures.

©Apple

Filters for searching messages are becoming more sophisticated. Communication using stickers has been strengthened, and you can create stickers by separating subjects from photos in your album. You can create GIF-like effects and use them in your messages.

You can easily share your information with Airdrop. Using the name drop function, you can pass on your contact information by simply hovering over another user's iPhone. You can enjoy content, music, videos, and games together with the same gesture. In the second half of the year, they plan to deploy a sharing function even outside of the airdrop scope.

©Apple

Standby is an extension that allows you to use your iPhone even when it is not in use. Standby is a function that displays various information when the iPhone is placed horizontally and charging. You can think of it as playing a similar role to a smart home device. It displays the current status of not only the clock but also several apps in context. It is always displayed and the color is displayed differently depending on the surrounding brightness.

©Apple
©Apple

📕 Editor's Notes

Apple's restriction strategy still appears to be going strong. It seems that carefully designing an attractive experience and making it available only to people who use Apple services will make it more popular. There will be more changes in the future to further expand the highly sophisticated iPhone experience.

It is predicted that the experience using only smartphones will have limitations, and the combination with new hardware/software will provide a new lifestyle. Wireless earphones have been a huge success, but I think challenges will continue in the smart home and XR/AR areas, which have not yet shown clear usability.

Emoji Kitchen: Combining this and that makes it twice as cute.

You can create new emojis by combining emojis in Google Search. Emoji Kitchen is a feature that was only available to Android users through Gbaord. It is one of the projects of Gboard, a virtual keyboard for Android and iOS developed by Google. Apple users can now experience it using the web browser Google Search and Google apps.

©Google

👁️ Designer Eye

You can use it by entering the search term 'emoji kitchen' in the Google search bar. You can choose 2 emoticons. You can select both at random or replace each at random.

©Google

Not all emojis are composited. Only a limited number of emoji combinations are possible in web browsers, and many more are possible in Gboard. The combined image can be copied to the clipboard and used as a sticker. It is not registered as a font but can be used as an image.

Elements may be combined individually or their characteristics may be combined. When you combine an object with an emotional expression, you personify it. The results look natural, so it's fun to see what the results will be. Combinations that you think will be similar patterns can also produce unexpected results, forcing you to roll the dice over and over again.

📕 Editor's Notes

It's been a while since I experienced the 'joy of writing'. I was excited to see what cute images would come out every time I pressed the cook button and rolled the dice. It's a faster, more positive and relaxing experience than refreshing a post on your social media feed.

Recently, it occurred to me that many products are focused only on usefulness and growth, and that usability and sensibility are not given much value, but for the first time in a while, an experience purely for fun came to me as a refreshing experience.

BBC EARTH: Nature as you see it is the main character

BBC Earth is rebranding. BBC Earth is a brand that contains documentaries such as Planet Earth and The Green Planet that have been viewed by over 1 billion people around the world. Featuring natural history and science content from BBC Studios, BBC Earth has introduced new worlds, from the world of microscopy to space telescopes.

It is led by BBC Studios Creative, the BBC's in-house creative group. I'm looking forward to the BBC's flagship series Planet Earth III when it launches this fall.

👁️ Designer Eye

The brand has evolved successfully since its TV launch eight years ago, allowing it to unify its visual language across all touchpoints. The new visual identity represents a ‘window to the world’.

High-quality nature video, which is the essence of the studio, is played in the background. In the center appears the capital letter EARTH, which is tightly combined with the BBC logo. They appear from bottom to top, as if showing cards one by one.

A circular ring with a glass texture surrounds the logo, with a blurred background. The lens-like ring expresses the view of the world, but also looks like a round Earth. The subject is clearly visible in the center, moving in and out of the logo and ring rather than simply playing in the background.

BBC EARTH ©BBC Creative Studio

Beyond this ring, a variety of nature is expressed. The moment when dew falls, a volcano erupting hotly, jungle plants full of vitality, a falling meteorite, and a roaring tiger are captured in fascinating scenes. It also represents humans living in nature, such as mountain climbers and sky divers.

BBC EARTH ©BBC Creative Studio

📕 Editor's Notes

This branding is perfect for brands that mainly deal with video media. There are many places that express nature itself, but it is wonderful to create a unique impression through design. Recently, there have been many cases of using similar palettes and symbolic shapes as anchors of identity to express pleasant experiences through illustrations, but this time, BBC EARTH intuitively conveyed their essence without much explanation and created a visually beautiful expression. I find it refreshing to capture the unique impression of the brand while revealing the essential nature without any additional elements.

It's also impressive that this work was created in their own creative studio. These days, there are many cases where all branding is left to a talented design studio, but it's great that the branding was improved internally to a high degree of completion. I look forward to seeing more branding cases that capture the essence of oneself in the future.

Google Font Renewal: Everything about web fonts.

Google fonts have been updated. Google Fonts is a library that provides 952 license-free fonts. It is a valuable tool that has made it possible to load and use web fonts in various web environments since its launch in 2010. The Google Fonts website has changed significantly this time.

The biggest change is that the tools and knowledge needed to use web fonts are included in tabs. Provides Fonts, Noto, Icons, Knowledge, and FAQ tabs. Mobile has a navigation tab at the bottom like an app. On a desktop, there is a navigation tab on the left like YouTube, and filters also appear as a sidebar on the left.

©Google
©Google

👁️ Designer Eye

You can find fonts using Fonts. Finding fonts by keyword is the basic navigation flow, and you can use filters to filter them out. Filters can be categorized by language, description, decoration, classification, attribute, etc. It seems to have been placed at the front of the filter because variable technology, which allows you to freely adjust various settings of the font, has recently emerged.

©Google

The Noto tab introduces Noto, created by Google. It is a font that aims to display languages around the world without omission and can be used for various characters such as Korean, Arabic, and Thai characters. You can watch the background and related stories of Noto, the Korean-Chinese-Japanese font CJK, etc. on YouTube.

©Google

The Icons tab introduces Material Symbols created by Google. Contains icons provided by Material Design. You can filter by style, weight, emphasis, visual size, and category. We provide code, SVG, and PNG that can be used on web, Android, and iOS. You can use a variable icon font that allows you to change various settings with code, and a static icon font that has fixed properties.

©Google

The Knowledge tab introduces a variety of knowledge about digital typography. It contains information such as how to apply variable fonts to the web, the history of Latin types, characteristics of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese fonts, readability and accessibility, Hangul design, Syllabic typography, typography basics, and fonts used in AR and VR.

©Google

📕 Editor's Notes

The usefulness of Fonts, Noto, and Icons is almost similar, and I am grateful that knowledge about web fonts is gathered in one place. Particularly noteworthy is the discussion of variable font technology, which allows users to easily configure it to suit various environments. Like a png image, the file is divided into meaningful names such as medium and bold and the thickness is fixed, but it is attractive that you can now adjust the style to the desired level, such as 100, 200, 300. I will be using Google Fonts a lot in the future, so be sure to use them!

Bangkok, the land of gods adorned with sparkling jewels

This summer, I wanted to experience a travel destination that I could enjoy without pressure. After considering several potential destinations, I chose Thailand, the center of travel in Southeast Asia. Since my last trip to Ho Chi Minh was interesting, I was also looking forward to Thailand, which has its own unique character.

Bangkok was an unknown city to me. I only heard that it is the most visited travel destination by people from all over the world and a destination that will amaze you with a nightlife that goes beyond your imagination.

Thailand is famous for being an East Asian country that was not colonized. By responding flexibly to times of intense conflict, we protected our heritage from war and civil strife. You can explore heritage from various periods, from ancient architecture to modern dynasties.

Among many cities in Thailand, Bangkok was pioneered by the French and Chinese when Ayutthaya was the capital in ancient times. It is said that the capital was moved after Ayutthaya was devastated by the invasion of the Konbaung Dynasty of Burma. Historically, it has been a place with an active influx of foreigners, and is said to be home to many ethnic groups, including Chinese, Japanese, and Indian.

The sunlight in Bangkok was strong. Numerous golden temples twinkled everywhere. Last April, a news article reported that the temperature in Thailand felt like 54 degrees, causing great concern. Luckily it wasn't that hot. I was able to endure it because I was mentally prepared, but I wondered how I lived in the days when there was no air conditioning. The period of my trip was the rainy season, but I was glad that it was cool when it rained.

Bangkok is the city with the most travelers in the world. According to Travelness's analysis of 23 years of MasterCard information, Bangkok ranked first among the most visited cities in the world. I was curious about what kind of charm attracts people, and during this trip, I was able to experience what kind of aesthetics it has.

It was a city with a great design, worthy of being the most visited travel destination by travelers from all over the world. Convenience facilities and services for travelers were well established, making it easy and convenient to get around.

A market scene where travelers of various races mix, a beautiful temple that is an intact Thai heritage, a space decorated with sophisticated vintage Indochina-style furniture, and a huge shopping mall that is both unique and convenient. It is usually famous as a city of fun and entertainment, but for me, the modern Indochina experience was even greater.

design in bangkok

Unique style of architecture

Bangkok's most impressive heritage is by far its original temples. It is full of pointed triangles that stretch endlessly toward the sky.

It is said that because rain, the water of the sky, pours endlessly, the slope of the ceiling was built steeply to let the water flow away quickly. Because of the hot weather, the ceiling is high and it has a double roof shape to hide the heated roof. Traditional houses are built as two-story structures to protect against flooding.

The Thai people are said to have believed that the space between the ground and the house was the realm of animals, the house was the realm of people, and the high roof was the space where gods resided. The god pointed out here is Buddha, and it is said that as many as 95% of the entire nation believes in Buddhism.

Bangkok is uniquely filled with decorations symbolizing not only Buddha but also demigods such as Naga, Garuda, and Hanuman. The top and both ends of the roof have unique decorations called Cheohwa. Each temple had a slightly different style, but usually had a Garuda at the top and a Naga at both left and right ends.

The temple is really beautiful on a rainy day. The Naga headdress and scale-like roof soar into the sky, twinkling like starlight. It was amazing to see locals gathering inside the magnificent temple and reciting Buddhist scriptures. It was all the more impressive because it was not a scenery created for tourists. At that moment, I felt like I was a Bangkokian and really living there.

It was beautiful and had a unique style that was difficult to find in other countries, focusing on the Buddhist worldview. There are many historical relics representing styles from various countries, such as the Khmer style, which originated in the neighboring country of Cambodia, as well as Burma, Sri Lanka, and China, but it was impressive to see that even among them, he created a style with his own distinct personality.

King Power Mahanakhon, a modern skyscraper, is known as the Minecraft building, but to my eyes, it looked like the remains of a naga that had been wrapped around and climbed up.

unique form of character

Bangkok's graphics were modern and had a lot of cool designs, but the most memorable personality was the typography. My first impression was that it looked like a snake had raised its head. The unadorned sans-serif style can sometimes look like a circuit diagram. In some ways, it looked like Arabic characters, but in other ways, it looked like Chinese characters, so it was unique.

Aksun Thai, the first Thai script, is said to have been created by King Ramkhamhaeng, also known as King Sejong of Bangkok, based on the ancient Khmer script. It was very different from Yeonjae and was said to have no vowels above and below the consonants. Basically, the vowel is 'uh' and when writing other vowels, they are written separately.

Although it is difficult because there are no spaces, surprisingly, the difficulty of learning letters and language is not high. The modernized typeface also goes well with Roman letters. It looks closer to a slap-style font than a Helvetica style.

Bangkok Experience

Beautiful boutique hotel

As it is called the battleground of hotels, it is full of attractive accommodations. The places I stayed were mostly small boutique hotels. Each hotel had its own distinct personality. It was an attractive space with a harmonious combination of dark wood and antique items.

Old Bike Inn

This is an accommodation where you can ride vintage bicycles. It is said that this building was a palace given by King Rama V and has been managed by the family for seven generations. The bedroom made of Thai teak wood and the vintage rustic interior are beautiful. I was curious where they got all the various props.

The room has a sunny veranda connected to the outside with glass. There is also a bathtub, so you can enjoy a leisurely bath while looking at the sky. It was my first accommodation, and I was able to enjoy Bangkok while eating breakfast and working at the window seat in the lobby.

1905 Heritage Corner

This is a small luxury guesthouse created by Cat Radio's female DJs Pineapple Nan and Mark Salmon. This building is over 100 years old and is located on the corner of Phraeng Phu Thon, one of the intersections that has existed since ancient times. This area was home to doctors, lawyers, and civil servants, as well as shops.

We maintained the traces of being Thailand's first denture factory and decorated it beautifully, taking advantage of the concept of a tea house where local people gathered. It was a blend of styles from the time when King Chulalongkorn was embracing Western styles. Wooden furniture from Burma is a unique mix of Thai, Chinese and Western influences. I was disappointed that I couldn't eat breakfast because I suddenly got so sick, but even the tea box that was given to me as a gift when I left was a beautiful accommodation.

Ariasom Villa

This is a beautiful boutique hotel decorated with 1940s items. It was built in 1941 by the current owner's grandparents, Khun Phra Chareon. Khun was dean of the College of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand's Seoul National University, and is considered the father of modern engineering in Thailand. For generations, Khun's granddaughter designed the tropical garden and runs it with her family.

The old teak floor, antique furniture, and Thai silk curtains are harmonious. The villa was renovated and the way to the room was complicated, but I felt like I had been invited as a guest.

The swimming pool I jumped into as soon as I arrived was so lush with beautiful plants that it felt like swimming in a forest. I spent some leisurely time at the swimming pool in the morning sunlight.

The breakfast overlooking the tropical garden through the long window was also attractive. I was worried that I might not be able to get a Grab as I had to go deep into the car, but I was able to get one easily.

modern space

icon siam

Luxury shopping mall icon Siam is a landmark representing Bangkok. It is a large-scale shopping mall with over 2 trillion Korean Won invested. It is a building whose design is as beautiful as its enormous size.

Seen from across the river, Icon Siam looked like a temple made of glass on the Chao Phraya River. The huge three-story glass windows are arranged in a zigzag pattern, making it look like the shiny body of a ship. Designs inspired by lotus flowers, water lilies, banana leaves, and traditional Thai shawls convey a very Thai feel.

It could take 30 minutes to drive across the river, but we took the free shuttle boat and crossed in 5 minutes. Sook Siam, a traditional floating market concept, welcomes you on the ground floor, G. The characteristics of each region of Thailand are captured in one space. Inside, there are actually moving boats selling food. It seemed like a direct replica of Damnoen Saduak, Thailand's traditional floating market.

When it comes to shopping malls, they are bound to be similar in functionality, but they were more attractive because they had a Thai feel. It was a wonderful space experience filled with modernity that leads trends while inheriting heritage.

design center

TCDC was a space I had been looking forward to since visiting Bangkok. TCDC, which was located on the 6th floor of Emporiom Design Center, a luxury department store, moved to the Bangkok Central Post Office building on Charoen Krung Road. As a creative platform, various activities such as online exhibitions, creative space workshops, and design festivals are taking place.

The front building mainly has space for communication, and the back building has a production space for membership. The Resource Center has a variety of books, and the Maker Space is equipped with expensive equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutting, and UV printing. The Material & Design Innovation Center categorizes various materials in detail.

Creation is rearranging existing things to add value that did not exist before. For this, you must have existing resources and materials that can be expressed. And we need technology and space (Maker Space) to combine this. TCDC Bangkok applied this concept throughout the building.

It was a wonderful space where I could see how serious Thailand is about design and receive great inspiration about the design education I plan to pursue in the future.

best scene

best space

Wat Phra Kaew

A gorgeous and huge temple housing the Emerald Buddha. Located within Bangkok's Grand Palace, you can explore its diverse heritage. This is a temple where you can feel the traditions of Thailand and Bangkok more strongly than any other space. Even if you can't go anywhere else, I highly recommend visiting this place.

Suthat Temple

This 19th-century temple is famous for its 20-meter-tall red giant swing made of teak wood and its 8-meter bronze Buddha statue. The sight of people chanting in a magnificent temple on a rainy day was the most vividly memorable scene of my trip to Bangkok. Bangkok citizens gather at the temple from 7 p.m., so make sure to visit on time.

icon siam ไอคอนสยาม

If you want to experience Bangkok's present and future, I highly recommend you visit. You can experience everything Bangkok has to offer in one place while avoiding the hot weather. Visit by boat from the other side of the Chao Phraya River for a beautiful view of Icon Siam.

Thailand Creative Design Center TCDC

There is a huge library and exhibition space with a variety of design books for creatives. You can conveniently work at the library by paying a fee. It's better to use as a co-working space rather than just for viewing.

IRIYABOD – อิ ริ ย า บ ถ – Thai Massage

Best massage. I received the best service at a reasonable price from the shop inside the hotel. There are many great street massages, but this is by far the best facility and service!

Seoul subway map renewal: greatly improved UX

The Seoul subway map has changed for the first time in 40 years.

In the 1980s, when the route map was first created, there were 106 stations on 4 routes. As of 2023, it has increased to 624 stations on 23 routes. In the future, 10 new routes and GTX will be built within Seoul by 2025, but the map design has changed as it has become difficult to express the routes.

👁️ Designer Eye

The new route map shows that Line 2, a circular line, has reached capacity. The remaining routes were expressed vertically, horizontally, and diagonally at a 45-degree angle.

The 'Octoliner' design method, which is the standard for world traffic diagram maps, was applied. The eight-line design was first applied to the London subway by Henry Beck in England in 1993 and has been used around the world.

Transfer stations are indicated by the colors of the lines that can be transferred to Taegeuk. English is also written below the bold Korean. The Han River and ocean topography were expressed to make it easier for people unfamiliar with Seoul's geography to predict where they are. They say they plan to add landmarks next year.

Colors and shapes are differentiated depending on the importance of the route. Main trains are maintained as bold lines, while urban rail, light rail, and trunk rail are represented by lines of lower hierarchy. The numbers indicating station numbers and routes have become slightly thinner and taller.

📕 Editor's Notes

The user experience of the Seoul subway map has been greatly improved. There were too many complex expressions in a small area and it was difficult to understand, but we limited and divided the rules and solved it with a concise design.

You can now easily distinguish between numerous routes and destinations, and navigate your route seamlessly by color and destination name. Not to mention the usefulness of the subway map, it has improved a lot in terms of usability and aesthetics.

📕 Editor's Notes

As a September event that mainly announces hardware upgrades, various changes were introduced. There is a lot about the iPhone and Apple Watch that make it easier to use. However, it is difficult to tell the difference between good performance chips and cameras unless you read them closely.

The best news is that you'll finally only need to carry a USB-C charger, and titanium will make your iPhone lighter. We are looking forward to the future of space videos taken with iPhones and Apple Watch, the first carbon-neutral product.

‘The Earth does not wait, so we cannot just wait.’ is an announcement that remains in my mind.

RDC 2023: Roblox Evolving as a Communication Tool

The Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), now in its 9th year, was held at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. Roblox, which now has 65.5 million users spending an average of 2.3 hours a day on it, has introduced a new form of communication.

You can now enjoy the evolution of avatars that express you, video calls with avatars that mimic your facial expressions, and VR experiences using Meta Quest.

©Roblox

👁️ Designer Eye

Roblox is famous for the creative avatars that users use to express themselves. In 2022, more than 10 million daily active users are said to have updated their avatars every day.

In the future, Roblox announced that it will allow users to customize their avatars using the API. From changing freckles or chin shape to items or outfits, you will be able to create them directly inside Roblox.

©Roblox

To make it easier for anyone to participate, you can also create an avatar by entering a text prompt in the recently popular ChatGPT style.

Machine learning technology that expresses emotions is expanded to accurately mimic the user's actual eye blink rate. The user's facial expressions are tracked using just a camera without any additional tracking equipment.

©Roblox

In addition to enjoyable experiences, the marketplace for creators is also evolving. As of June 2023, Roblox developers have earned a total of $680 million, and the company plans to introduce ways for creators to earn even more in the future.

All premium subscribers can create Marketplace items. You can offer subscription models, limited items, etc. It is said that a feature that will prevent duplication of items created by creators and allow them to claim ownership is also being developed.

©Roblox

📕 Editor's Notes

Roblox, which is best described as a metaverse, goes beyond being a game and becomes a platform. We are creating a world beyond a game where you win based on set rules. We proposed a new way to communicate through virtual space and focused on creating a new market within it.

It is noteworthy that it is not simply about increasing items or stocks to increase the size of the company. It seems like a great example of expanding upon your own unique essence.
