A blog post about 'Material 3 Expressive', the new design system that Google will unveil at its developer conference Google I/O scheduled for later this month, was accidentally pre-released, revealing its main contents.
Material 3 Expressive is Google's 'most studied design system' after years of research. It aims to create interfaces that connect emotionally with users, breaking away from the simple, clean, but uniform UI of the past. According to the blog, the design principles use 'color, shape, size, motion, and container' as core components, and through this, it was possible to design UIs that 'draw attention to important elements and naturally group similar elements.'
Since 2022, Google has conducted 46 independent studies, combining design, engineering, and user research, and has conducted eye tracking, surveys, and usability tests with over 18,000 global participants. The results show that emotional design improves both functionality and accessibility. According to the tests, the speed of recognizing key buttons is more than 4 times faster than before, and the time to perform actions is shortened to a few seconds.
Concept design examples included a rounded “floating toolbar,” a reimagined clock app, a voice input field, photo editing tools, and payment and wallet screens. In the email app, the Send button, which was previously on the top toolbar, was moved to a larger size above the keyboard and was color-coded, dramatically reducing the time it took for users to find the button.
Google plans to release actual code and design files through related developer sessions at Google I/O 2025, allowing developers to directly apply the new emotional design patterns. The change in the design system is expected to have a significant impact on the Android ecosystem across the entire user experience.
